Blight of Contagion received only a modest 15% damage buff in Path of Exile 3.29, but the real game changer is the massive Area of Effect improvement to POE currency Contagion. That single change transforms the build into an excellent league starter capable of clearing Legions with almost no investment while progressing smoothly into red maps.

Enjoy an 8% discount. Use code: Lily

This guide covers the leveling strategy, early Atlas progression, farming methods, and currency plan used to reach endgame quickly.

Why Start with Blight of Contagion?

Although the damage increase is relatively small, the larger Contagion spread dramatically improves map clear.

The build's biggest strengths are:

Extremely fast Legion clearing

Smooth mapping with minimal gear

Strong early boss damage

Excellent scaling into farming strategies

The only significant weakness is survivability, especially before investing in defensive gear.

Leveling Before You Get Blight of Contagion

Blight of Contagion is a Transfigured Gem, meaning you cannot begin the campaign with it.

Instead, level as an Occultist using a Chaos Spellslinger setup.

The core idea is simple:

Link multiple Chaos Damage over Time skills with Spellslinger.

Use Frenzy to trigger every spell with a single attack.

Generate Frenzy Charges naturally while moving through the campaign.

Compared to alternatives like self-cast Soulrend, this setup provides significantly faster leveling and smoother progression.

Occultist is preferred over Trickster because it offers more serious early damage and better long-term scaling for Chaos DoT builds.

Early Mapping Gear Priorities

After finishing the campaign:

Buy inexpensive rare gear with Life and Elemental Resistances.

Use a five-link body armour if you found one during leveling.

Purchase the required unique staff before switching to Blight of Contagion.

Buy the Blight of Contagion gem as soon as it becomes available.

If the staff is unavailable early in the league, simply continue mapping with the Spellslinger setup. It is strong enough to comfortably clear early maps and even reach red maps while waiting for upgrades.

Transitioning to Blight of Contagion

Once both the unique staff and gem are acquired, the build immediately feels much stronger.

A useful trick is leveling the gem with a Facetor Lens, which can be obtained from the hidden reward room in the final Labyrinth.

The new Occultist Ascendancy node becomes particularly valuable for bossing.

After channeling Blight long enough, it grants 50% more damage, dramatically improving single-target performance.

Although the node doubles mana costs, the staff's high base mana regeneration combined with Power Charges is sufficient to sustain continuous casting.

Atlas Progression

The first three Voidstones are relatively straightforward with this build.

After obtaining the first two:

Upgrade to a six-link body armour.

Purchase Badge of the Brotherhood for future scaling.

Finish the third Voidstone.

Complete unique maps to unlock Atlas passives.

The Atlas tree focuses on:

Legion

Red Altars

Quantity nodes
